Useful Terms and Definitions
Phonological Awareness - knowledge that words are made up of smaller units of sound.
Phonetics - the systematic study of the sound to symbol relationship and correspondence of a language.
Phoneme - the smallest unit of a speech sound that distinguishes one word from another. (eg. bit “t” and bid “d”.)
Digraph - a sound picture, a pair of letters that represents a single speech sound. (eg. “ng” in ring.)
Dipthong - refers to two adjacent vowel sounds occurring in the same syllable. (eg. “oy” in toy.)
Decoding - translating printed word into sound, an identification skill. ( eg. dog, jump )
Encoding - spelling by representing each sound in sequence.
Mapping - technique of saying each sound as you write the sound picture.
Segmenting - ability to separate sounds in words, in the correct sequence. (eg. /f/ /r/ /o/ /g)
Automaticity- ability to get the word quickly, effortlessly and unconsciously after a brief visual scan.
